The Magyar Conquest and Kingdom of Hungary (c. 895–1526)
  • Settlement of the Carpathian Basin: In the late 9th century (around 895 CE), the Hungarian (Magyar) tribes, led by Grand Prince Árpád, migrated from the Pontic steppes and settled the Carpathian Basin.
  • Christian Kingdom: Around 1000 CE, Stephen I, a descendant of Árpád, was recognized by the Pope as the first Christian King of Hungary. He established a network of dioceses and integrated Hungary into Western Christian Europe.
  • Medieval Power: The Kingdom of Hungary became a significant European power during the Middle Ages, with King Matthias Corvinus (1458–1490) presiding over a cultural golden age, establishing a Renaissance court and a professional standing army.
  • Mongol Invasion: A devastating blow came with the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242, which severely depopulated the country.
  • Ottoman Wars: Hungary bore the brunt of the Ottoman wars in Europe during the 15th and early 16th centuries.
Ottoman and Habsburg Rule (1526–1867)
Following the defeat at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, Hungary was divided into three parts and experienced periods of Ottoman and later Habsburg rule. Uprisings against Habsburg control occurred in the early 18th century and again in 1848–1849, but were suppressed.
Austria-Hungary and the World Wars (1867–1945)
The 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise created a Dual Monarchy, granting Hungary more autonomy and leading to economic growth. However, the empire's collapse after World War I resulted in significant territorial losses for Hungary under the Treaty of Trianon. During World War II, Hungary sided with the Axis powers and suffered considerable damage and casualties before being occupied by German and then Soviet forces.
Communist Hungary and Modern Era (1945–Present)
After World War II, Hungary was under Soviet occupation and became a communist state in 1949. A revolution against Soviet rule in 1956 was suppressed. Hungary transitioned to a democracy in 1989 and subsequently joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.
