A tram in Vienna. The city is famous for its trams and masterfully-planned infrastructure! |
Trams are one of the oldest types of infrastructure, existing even before trains. Initially, they were horse-drawn, but now, electric trams are the norm in most countries.
Many cities in the United States formerly had modern electric tram lines, including Los Angeles, which prided itself on the modernity of its railway system. In fact, some tramways, called "interurbans," ran between cities, connecting communities along the way. However, these systems were almost all removed in favor of freeways following World War II, but many have since been partially rebuilt, with them being called "Second-generation" tram systems. |
