Freeways are absolutely critical pieces of infrastructure both both urban and rural residents alike. Particularly in the US, freeways stand alone as the only mode of transportation for rural residents, and often the fastest mode for urban ones. When there's not traffic, that is.
However, there is a fatal flaw to freeways. They need a ton of land, and often end up with low passenger flow numbers when compared to more space-efficient options, like railways. Their construction has led to the destruction of entire cities and the displacement of thousands, and all to further inefficint transit that requires a car to operate. |
