Gustav Mahler's First Symphony, 3rd movement tranforms the French children's song and beginning band piece "Frere Jacques" into a mournful funeral march pitched in E♭ minor for a brief part at the end. The picture above depicts said funeral, based on an Austrian folk tale. |
"Dealing with anxiety and existential terror, deep distress, dark depression. The dark night of the soul. Fear, hesitation, shuddering, goose bumps. The language of ghosts."
The key is very dark, with a similar hopelessness to that of F minor. It is very seldom used, reserved for truly advanced pieces with complex chord changes, or deeply mournful ones. |
