The Circle of 4ths. Hover over the image to see its sister circle, the Circle of 5ths.

The Circle of 4ths tells you everything about music theory. Literally everything. The circle is practically the bible of music theory!

The Circle is organized so that one rotation clockwise adds a flat to the key signature and one rotation anticlockwise removes a flat (or adds a sharp). The Circle of 5ths is identical to it, but a rotation clockwise adds a sharp instead of removing one.

The circle serves as the basis for most mordern chord progressions, ii-V7-Is, and scale modes, which are discussed more on the next page.
