| Benny is the main character of The Sandlot. He is the oldest and most committed member of the group, and is the only one who is truly considering baseball as a career for him. He accepts Scottie despite no one else doing so, and is able to get the Babe Ruth ball back to him by facing the Beast head-on. |
Scottie is the narrator of the story. He is a new face to San Fernando, and joins the Sandlot in order to get more friends. He quickly grows to become a core member despite his extremely rough start and becomes best friends with Benny, a friendship that continued to their adult lives. |
| Ham, as he is called by the boys, is the team's catcher and general trash-talker. He often criticizes Scottie, with his most famous quote, "You're killing me, Smalls!" becoming a pop culture icon. He is good as baseball but ends up becoming a boxer, adopting the name "The Great Hambino" in reference to Baba Ruth. |
| Mr Mertle is the owner of the Beast and lives close to the Sandlot. He was a close friend of Babe Ruth's and even played baseball with him, but he was blinded by a ball, forcing him to retire. He is still very passionate about baseball and owns tons of high-value memorabilia, but he has little use for it, so he uses it to take the opportunity to talk to the boys about baseball. |
| The Beast, also known by his real name of Hercules, is the villain of the story. He is the one who the kids make up stories about, with them saying that he even ate a kid. In reality, however, he is a kind dog, and becomes the mascot of the Sandlot following the retrival of the Babe Ruth ball. |
