The movie did not win any awards, but has received praise from critics at release and now, and is now consideral a cult classic film, with it being compared to A Christmas Story. The movie, despite being set in San Fernando, was actually filmed in the Salt Lake City area, including Ogden. The Sandlot Boys actually attended a baseball camp prior to filming, even 11-year old Tom Guiry, who played Scottie. The chewing tobacco in the film was actually made of liquorice, but it still made most kids act the same way they did in the film. Liquorice isn't that gross! The PF Flyers, the shoe that Benny wore when he tried to get the Babe Ruth ball back, were actually brought back thanks to the movie. The Beast is actually based on a real dog from the director's childhood. The real dog was unfortunately not as friendly. The movie has two sequels, but neither has lived up to the original in terms of fame and impact. The movie wouldn't have been anywhere near as much of a success it was without home video, an emerging technology of the time. Scenes from the movie have been recreated by two baseball teams: the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. |
