The LA Memorial Coliseum will be the central hub for all track and field (athletics) events during the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, continuing its historic legacy as the first venue to host events for three separate Olympics (1932, 1984, and 2028). For the first time in Olympic history, the athletics program will run for the entire duration of the Games, starting on the first day of competition, July 15, 2028, and concluding on the final day. The schedule features an innovative twist, with athletics taking place in the first week, while swimming moves to the second week to accommodate venue transitions. The first day of track and field action in the Coliseum will include all three rounds of the women's 100-meter sprint, culminating in the first major final of the Games.

The stadium will host a wide array of track and field disciplines, including all running, jumping, and throwing events, from the sprints and distance races to pole vault, shot put, and javelin. It will also be the venue for the physically demanding multi-event competitions, the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. While the in-stadium events run from July 15-24, the road events, including the men's and women's marathons, will be held on the final weekend, July 29 and 30, with their start and finish lines outside the Coliseum, likely near Venice Beach. Following the Olympics, the Coliseum will also host all Para Athletics events for the Paralympics.
