Shakespeare performed Hamlet in his own personal theater, the Globe. Situated in the Southbank area of London (its historic entertainment district), the original Globe theater opened in 1599 to much popularity.

The original Globe operated until 1613, when it destroyed by fire. A new theater was built on the same site the following year, but was closed in 1642 due to the English Civil War. A modern recreation, built in 1997, sits some 750 feet from the site of the original, and numerous other replicas exist, including some in Germany,  the US, and even a travelling Globe based in New Zealand!
