Potatoes are a starchy root crop grown across the world as a staple food. Despite their ubiquity in modern times, potatoes are actually a fairly recently-discovered crop by Europeans, since they originated in South America and came across the Atlantic in the 1600s.

Today, potatoes are beyond common, being seen in many worldwide dishes in the form of french fries, mashed potatoes, or simply as baked potatoes, consumed skin and all.

Potatoes have left a major cultural impact (as seen in Ireland), and they have even found their way into Minecraft. Potatoes have even become a source of fuel, either from discarded fryer oil or alcohol.

Regardless of you you cut it, the potato is a very important crop!
