Scotty Smalls
The protagonist and narrator of the film, Smalls is a quiet, timid, and intelligent boy who moves to a new town with his mother and stepfather. He is socially awkward and knows nothing about baseball. He is initially embarrassed and clumsy, but with Benny's help, he slowly finds his place among the sandlot crew. His innocent mistake of using a baseball signed by Babe Ruth sets the central conflict of the movie in motion.

Hamilton "Ham" Porter
The loudmouth catcher of the team, Ham is known for his big personality, quick wit, and a flair for hurling insults, especially at the rival Little League team. Despite his boisterous demeanor, he is fiercely loyal to his friends and provides some of the movie's most famous and hilarious lines.

Michael "Squints" Palledorous
The mischievous and nerdy member of the group, Squints is known for his thick glasses and a reputation for scheming. His legendary, slow-motion dive into the community pool is a pivotal moment in the film, leading to his first kiss with lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn, whom he later marries.
Mr. Mertle: The recluse neighbor whose backyard holds "The Beast." He turns out to be a former professional baseball player who went blind and knew Babe Ruth personally.
"The Beast" (Hercules): The intimidating, ball-eating English Mastiff who guards Mr. Mertle's backyard and is the subject of many of the sandlot kids' fears and tall tales. He is eventually revealed to be a sweet-natured dog named Hercules.
Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez
The natural leader of the team, Benny is the most talented baseball player and is respected by all the boys. He is kind and welcoming, taking Smalls under his wing and teaching him how to play the game. His confidence and bravery are on full display during the climactic chase scene with "The Beast," which earns him the lifelong nickname "The Jet".
