We Love Pac-Man

🎮 The History of Pac-Man

🟡 How It Started (1979–1980)

Pac-Man was created by Japanese game designer Toru Iwatani at Namco.

At the time, most arcade games were about space battles or shooting (like Space Invaders). Iwatani wanted to create a game that would appeal to everyone — especially women — and be less violent.

Fun fact: The character’s shape was inspired by a pizza with a slice missing 🍕.

The game was first released in Japan in 1980 under the name Puck Man. When it came to the United States later that year, the name was changed to Pac-Man to prevent vandalism of arcade machines.

🚀 Explosion of Popularity (Early 1980s)

When Pac-Man launched in the U.S., it became a massive hit. It was distributed in America by Midway Games.

By 1982:

  • It had become the highest-grossing arcade game of all time.

  • There were Pac-Man toys, lunch boxes, board games, and even a hit song called Pac-Man Fever by Buckner & Garcia.

  • It even had a cartoon on ABC.

This period is often called “Pac-Mania.”

🎮 Sequels and Spin-Offs

Because of its success, many sequels were made, including:

  • Ms. Pac-Man (one of the most successful sequels ever)

  • Pac-Man Plus

  • Super Pac-Man

Over time, Pac-Man moved from arcades to home consoles, computers, and mobile devices.
