At the time, most arcade games were about space battles or shooting (like Space Invaders). Iwatani wanted to create a game that would appeal to everyone — especially women — and be less violent. Fun fact: The character’s shape was inspired by a pizza with a slice missing 🍕. The game was first released in Japan in 1980 under the name Puck Man.
