Balatro: Detailed Game RulesBalatro is a poker-inspired roguelike deck-building game where you play poker hands, earn chips, and use special cards to create powerful scoring combinations. Your goal is to beat increasingly difficult score targets by building a deck and strategy that can produce enormous scores. 1. How a round worksEach round is called a Blind. You must earn enough points, called chips, to meet the Blind's target score. There are three types of Blinds: Small Blind The first challenge of an Ante. It has the lowest score requirement and rewards you with money for winning. Big Blind A harder challenge with a higher score target. You must beat it to reach the Boss Blind. Boss Blind The final challenge of each Ante. Each Boss Blind has a special rule that can interfere with your strategy, such as weakening certain cards or limiting your options. You can usually choose to skip a Blind in exchange for a special Tag reward, but skipping means you give up that Blind's normal opportunity to earn money and score. 2. How poker hands score pointsYou select cards from your hand and play them to create a poker hand. Each hand has a base chip value and a base multiplier. The basic scoring formula is: \[ \text{Score}=\text{Chips}\times\text{Mult} \]
For example, if a hand scores 40 chips and has a multiplier of 4, your score is: \[ 40\times4=160 \]
The game also adds chip values from scoring cards, and upgrades can increase your chips or multiplier. Here are the main poker hands, from generally weakest to strongest: High Card No matching cards or other qualifying combination. Only your highest card counts as the hand type. Pair Two cards of the same rank, such as two 8s. Two Pair Two separate pairs, such as two 5s and two Kings. Three of a Kind Three cards of the same rank. Straight Five consecutive ranks, such as 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Flush Five cards of the same suit, such as five Hearts. Full House Three cards of one rank and two cards of another. Four of a Kind Four cards of the same rank. Straight Flush Five consecutive cards all sharing the same suit. Other hands, such as Five of a Kind and Flush House, can also become possible through special deck modifications. The stronger hands generally have higher base scores, but upgrades can make even a simple Pair extremely powerful. 3. Hands and discardsYou have a limited number of hands and discards for each Blind.
You can sometimes beat a Blind with fewer hands than expected by building a strong scoring strategy. 4. The Joker cardsJokers are among the most important parts of Balatro. They give your run special abilities and can dramatically change how you score. 8
Jokers can do things such as:
You normally have a limited number of Joker slots, so choosing which Jokers to keep is an important decision. Joker order matters: Scoring effects resolve in sequence, so placing a multiplier-increasing Joker after a Joker that adds Mult can sometimes produce a much higher score. 5. Special cards and upgradesSeveral other card types can help you build your strategy. Tarot Cards These can modify playing cards, create new cards, change suits, improve money, or provide other useful effects. They help you shape your deck around a particular strategy. Planet Cards These permanently improve the base chips and Mult of a particular poker hand for the current run. Repeatedly upgrading your preferred hand can make it much stronger. Spectral Cards These provide powerful effects that can transform your deck or Jokers, but some come with trade-offs or risks. Enhanced and Modified Cards Individual playing cards can receive enhancements, editions, seals, or other modifications that change their scoring value or special effects. 6. Money and the shopMoney is earned through rewards, interest, and certain card abilities. You spend it in the shop between Blinds. You can purchase:
Managing money is important because spending everything immediately can leave you unable to buy a powerful upgrade later. Saving money can also earn interest at the end of a round, depending on your cash balance and the game's interest rules. 7. Antes and increasing difficultyA standard run progresses through 8 Antes, with a Small Blind, Big Blind, and Boss Blind in each Ante unless you skip some. Each new Ante raises the score requirements. Boss Blinds also introduce new restrictions, forcing you to adapt your deck and Joker combinations. Once you defeat the final Boss Blind of Ante 8, you win the standard run. You can also continue into Endless Mode, where the score targets keep growing. 8. Winning and losingYou win a standard run by beating the final required Boss Blind. You lose when you cannot reach a Blind's score target before running out of hands. You then have to start a new run, although you may unlock new cards, decks, or challenges through progression. There are also different decks and challenge modes that change the rules and offer new ways to play. The most important rules to remember
The key to Balatro is that you are not just playing poker — you are building a scoring engine. The best strategies combine poker hands, card upgrades, and Joker effects to make your scores grow far beyond what ordinary poker could produce.
