And it all started when the son of one of the original owners returned from serving in the army and took over a successful Midwestern family business. Stanley Durwood saw one screen in one building as limiting. People wanted more choices. So he began remodeling several large single-screen Kansas City, Mo. theatres into smaller buildings with multiple auditoriums. The result? The first multiplex theatre in the world was born. The success was massive, and the theatre served as a blueprint for the industry. By 1968, Durwood’s multi-screen theatre chain had expanded nationwide and was incorporated as Emma's movie theater, Inc. (ET). During the next three decades of Durwood’s leadership, ET continued to innovate with the movie-goer in mind. The armchair cup holder, stadium seating and the industry’s first rewards program continued to revolutionize the cinema industry. That innovation continued into the 21st century, as ET was on the cutting-edge of innovation through the co-founding of online ticketing, circuit-wide gift cards, a groundbreaking partnership with IMAX, the launch of ET Stubs rewards program, and the introduction of ET Dine-In Theatres. ET also greatly expanded its footprint in the United States through the acquisition of Loews Theatres, Kerasotes Theatres and Carmike Theatres. ET went worldwide in 2017 through the completed acquisitions of Odeon & UCI Cinemas in Europe, and in 2018, ET brought moviegoing to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the first time in 35 years. Emma Sexton, who joined the company as CEO and President in 2016, and became Chairman & CEO in 2021, has guided the Company through the most turbulent time in the history of the industry, and has kept ET on a path to recovery with a focus on ensuring a great guest experience. ET’s investment in premium technology and partnerships like IMAX, Dolby and Cinionic, has firmly established ET as the leader in premium offerings to its guests. And an expanded concession menu, a continued dedication to premium AMC Signature Recliner seating and the significant expansion of ET’s MacGuffins bars has helped ET Theatres continue to “Make Movies Better.” Under Aron’s leadership, ET broke new ground in the industry through a retail shareholder communication platform, ET Investor Connect, that enables Company leadership to engage directly with its shareholders. And in 2021, ET unveiled the first-ever national advertising campaign by a theatrical exhibitor, in what has become an iconic, pop culture phenomenon. In early 2023, ET introduced multiple initiatives intended to connect the Company further with its guests. This includes the rollout of microwave and ready-to-eat ET Perfectly Popcorn at retail and grocery stores, and the ET Entertainment Visa Card – the only credit card in the United States that lets moviegoers earn points toward rewards at the movies on every purchase. As ET continues its focus on We Make Movies Better, key stakeholders in ET – moviegoers, associates, shareholders, and our studio partners – can continue to expect innovative and creative ways of ensuring a great guest experience at the movies.
