Setup
- Players:
2 to 10 players, ages 7 and older.
- Cards:
Played with a standard 108-to-112 card deck containing four color suits (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue), numbered cards (0–9), and special action cards.
- Deal:
Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards
to each player.
- Draw & Discard Piles:
Place the remaining deck face down as the draw pile, then flip over the top card to start the discard pile. If the first flipped card is a Wild or action card, standard rules typically ignore or re-draw it depending on the edition.
- Turn Order:
The player to the dealer’s left goes first, and play moves clockwise.
- Matching:
On your turn, you must play a card from your hand that matches the top card of the discard pile by color, number, or symbol
.
- Drawing Cards:
If you cannot or choose not to play a card, you must draw one card
from the draw pile. If that newly drawn card is playable, you may choose to play it immediately.
- Saying "UNO":
The moment you play your next-to-last card
(leaving you with just 1 card), you must yell "UNO!"
. If another player catches you before the next player takes a turn, you must draw 2 to 4 penalty cards
(depending on official vs. house rules).
- Skip:
The next player in line loses their turn.
- Reverse:
Changes the direction of play (from clockwise to counter-clockwise, or vice versa). In a 2-player game, a Reverse acts like a Skip.
- Draw Two (+2):
The next player must draw 2 cards and misses their turn.
- Wild Card:
Can be played on any turn; the player who plays it chooses which color continues play.
- Wild Draw Four (+4):
Allows the player to choose the next color and
forces the next player to draw 4 cards and lose their turn. The victim has the right to challenge
if they believe you held a card of the matching color in your hand.
- Round Winner:
The first person to empty their hand wins the round.
- Point System (Optional):
You can play to 500 points
. Number cards count at face value, action cards (Skip, Reverse, Draw Two) are worth 20 points
, and Wild cards are worth 50 points
. The winner of the round scores points equal to the total value of cards left in their opponents' hands.
Penalty
- Forgetting to say "UNO!":
If you have only one card left and forget to call out "UNO!" before your card touches the discard pile, you must draw 2 cards
—if
an opponent catches you before the next player takes a turn (draws, plays, or touches the pile). If you realize your mistake and say "UNO!" before anyone catches you, there is no penalty.
- Wild Draw Four Challenge:
If a player uses a Wild Draw Four, the next player can challenge them. The player must privately show their hand.
- If the challenger was right
(the player did
have a matching color in hand), the challenged player draws 4 cards
.
- If the challenger was wrong
(the player had no matching color), the challenger draws 6 cards
(the 4 they were supposed to draw plus 2 more) and loses their turn.
- Playing out of turn / Wrong card:
If a player plays a card when it is not their turn or plays an invalid card, official rules typically require them to take the card back and draw a penalty card
(or 2 cards depending on the rule interpretation).
