The Cave Game version of Minecraft, officially known as Cave game tech test,[1][2] was made by Markus "Notch" Persson on May 13, 2009 at 16:55 UTC and is the first known version of Minecraft (then known as Cave Game) to be recorded, though this version was never released to the public.

Cave Game was based on an earlier game that Notch had created called "RubyDung". The demo consisted of only Cobblestone and Grass, and was made to visualize how caves could be generated.

There were no gamemode options. A player was placed in a flat world and was free to explore.

The earliest version of the game can be played through the Minecraft Launcher by allowing Alpha versions and creating a profile to use this version, labelled as "rd-132211".

In Minecraft, players explore a procedurally generatedthree-dimensional world with virtually infinite terrain made up of voxels. Players can discover and extract raw materials, craft tools and items, and build structures, earthworks, and machines. Depending on their chosen game mode, players can fight hostile mobs, as well as cooperate with or compete against other players. The game has two main modes; one being survival mode, where players must acquire resources to survive, and a creative mode where players have unlimited resources and the ability to fly. Several other game modes exist besides the two main ones, such as one that allows players to spectate others and one that plays identically to survival mode, but features permadeath. The game's large community also offers a wide variety of user-generated content, such as modificationsserversskinstexture packs, and custom maps, which add new game mechanics and possibilities.
