The Game Boy series was a series of handheld video game consoles made by Nintendo, produced from 1989 to 2005, before being shelved for the Nintendo DS and 3DS family of systems and eventually the Nintendo Switch. Timeline (based on Japanese release OR earliest release): Game Boy (the original): Game Boy (April 21, 1989) Game Boy Pocket (July 20, 1996) Super Game Boy [SNES Addon] (June 1994) Super Game Boy 2 [SNES Addon] (January 1998) Game Boy Light (April 14, 1998) Game Boy Color (October 21, 1998) (considered an upgrade of the original Game Boy, had its own exclusive games, but is generally included as a variant of the original Game Boy)
Game Boy Advance: Game Boy Advance (March 21, 2001) Game Boy Advance SP (February 14, 2003) Game Boy Player [Gamecube Addon] (March 21, 2003) Game Boy Micro (September 13, 2005)
Notably, the Nintendo DS (November 21, 2004) and the Nintendo DS Lite (March 2, 2006) supported Game Boy Advance cartridges. Later models, such as the Nintendo DSi (November 1, 2008) and Nintendo DSi XL (November 21, 2009) removed the GBA cartridge slot. The Nintendo 3DS had an ambassador program for early purchasers of the 3DS before its price cut from $249.99 to $169.99, which allowed users to obtain free GBA games such as F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Metroid Fusion, Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Wario Land 4, and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames. The 3DS hardware natively supports GBA games as they share similar hardware, but it is unable to play physical cartridges. The Nintendo Switch Online subcription offers Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to play on the Nintendo Switch. If you subscribe to the Expansion Pack, you also get access to Game Boy Advance games. |
