Tom and Jerry is an American animated series about a cat and mouse that are always at odds with each other, but sometimes put aside their differences. The Tom and Jerry series began in 1940 when William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created the first cartoon, Puss Gets the Boot, for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The characters were originally named Jasper and Jinx, but were renamed by animator John Carr.
