Target's history can be traced back to 1902, when George Dayton founded a retail chain in Minneapolis called Goodfellow Dry Goods Company. The company's name was changed to Dayton's Dry Goods Company in 1903 and then to The Dayton Company in 1911. The first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota in 1962, and the company's history includes several other notable events

- 1967: The parent company was renamed the Dayton Corporation.
- 1969: The Dayton Corporation merged with the J.L. Hudson Company to become the Dayton-Hudson Corporation.
- 1976: Target became the first discount retailer to sell Levi's jeans.
- 1983: Target's headquarters moved to City Center, where it became the building's largest tenant.
- 2000: The Dayton-Hudson Corporation was renamed Target Corporation.
2021: Target announced a partnership with Apple to create a new shopping experience.
