The history of Citizen watches includes the following milestones:
- 1924: Citizen released its first pocket watch. The company was founded by Japanese and Swiss investors who took over the Shokosha Watch Research Institute.
- 1956: Citizen released the Parashock, Japan's first wristwatch with a shock-resistant mechanism.
- 1961: Citizen released the Jet, Japan's slimmest men's self-winding wristwatch.
- 1962: Citizen released the Chronometer, its first men's high-accuracy manually-wound wristwatch.
- 1965: Citizen released the Crystal Seven, the world's slimmest men's self-winding wristwatch with a calendar.
- 1966: Citizen released the CITIZEN X8, Japan's first men's full-scale electronic wristwatch.
- 2005: Citizen introduced Super Titanium™ for greater lightness and comfort.
- 2011: Citizen embarked on a new quest: Eco-Drive with Annual Accuracy of ±5 Seconds.
- 2017: Citizen fused technology and tradition with the Eco-Drive and the washi paper dial.
- 2019: Citizen challenged for the crown with an Annual accuracy of ±1 second.
Citizen watches are made in Japan, with the exception of a specific movement produced by a Citizen subsidiary based in Switzerland.
